Write in Hindi, Read in Punjabi

Punjabi languageImage via Wikipedia
Vishal Goyal, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, Punjabi University, Patiala who is doing Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal, Professor, Department of Computer Science has developed a web based machine translation system which can convert text input in Hindi into Punjabi after translation. You may also translate complete Hindi webpages by specifying the URL, though the processing is annoyingly slow at the moment. [Source: Punjab Newsline Network]

Editor's note: We found that presently the system only accepts input text typed using Krutidev, a popular True type font in Hindi, and doesn't work with Unicode. Vishal clarified in his comment that the tool works with Unicode.

यहां बुलाने का शुक्रिय देबूभाई।
डॉ गुरप्रीत को बधाई, एक अच्छी सुविधा के लिए। एक बात समझ में नहीं आई। यह सुविधा हिन्दी से पंजाबी में अनुवाद की सुविधा भी देती है या केवल कनवर्ट ही करती है। क्या यह यूनिकोड में नहीं है?

It is excellent that Goyal ji is working on Punjabi language. It needs to be clarified if the system translates or only transliterates. Also, in the age of Unicode, it doesn't help if the system does not work with Unicode. Our Ph.D. theses should be geared more towards actual usable tools rather than degree getting tools.

Goyal ji should also take a look at Girgit the Indic Unicode Converter. Please also review the Uninagari Gurmukhi typewriter.

Dear All,
Thanks for looking at the site and giving the feedbacks. It is to clarify that The website is fully functional for unicode. It fully supports unicode. And Regarding Editor note, I would like to inform the typing will in unicode only But the typing pad has been kept as per Kruitdev Font mapping for the convenience of people used to typing in Krutidev. Hope All wll enjoy using it. One more thing, It translates and transliterate both. Even the Hindi Newspapers can been translated into equvilent Punjabi Just you need to provide the URL of the newspaper website. The format is retained and translated to Punjabi. Thanks once again and you can ask me any kind of query at vishal.pup@gmail.com or gslehal@gmail.com.
Regards,
Vishal Goyal
